# Alcohol use counseling for first responders in Utah.

The drink after shift may have started as a reliable way to come down. Over time it can become the plan: what you think about on the drive home, what makes sleep possible, or what puts distance between you and a call you do not want to feel. You do not have to reach a particular label or sober date before talking honestly about it.

You might recognize this

## Some of this sounds familiar.

You plan the first drink before the shift ends and feel unsettled when it is not available.

The line keeps moving: only after work, only at home, only a few, then a new rule replaces the last one.

Alcohol helps briefly, but sleep, irritability, memory, or relationships are getting harder.

A call, loss, injury, or long accumulation of exposure is waiting underneath the drinking.

You avoid therapy because you expect judgment or believe sobriety will be required before anyone will help.

How I help

## The work, unhurried.

We start with honesty, not a test. The alcohol pattern and the reasons it became useful can be addressed in the same room.

Alcohol can solve a real short-term problem. It can lower adrenaline, interrupt thoughts, mark the end of a shift, or create a few hours of distance from what happened. Recognizing that function is not the same as ignoring the cost. Therapy begins by understanding the full pattern: when you drink, what changes, what gets harder, and what you want to be different.

Sobriety is not required to begin. You do not need to arrive with a label, a promise, or a perfect account of your use. Honest information makes the work more useful. We can talk about ambivalence directly, including the part of you that wants change and the part that still relies on alcohol to get through the night.

For first responders, alcohol use may be tied to trauma exposure, sleep disruption, pain, isolation, or a nervous system that remains activated after work. Treating only the drinking can miss the reason it became so effective. When a particular call or period keeps returning, EMDR or Accelerated Resolution Therapy may be considered alongside practical work on the current pattern.

Pacing matters. Trauma work is not something you have to force while your life feels unstable. We can build ways to manage distress, clarify your goals, and decide together when memory-focused work makes sense. Solution-focused therapy keeps attention on choices you can make now while leaving room for deeper work when you are ready.

Outpatient individual therapy is not the right level of support for every situation. If a higher level of care is needed, I will say so and help you identify appropriate options. That conversation is not a punishment or a reason to hide what is happening. It is part of being direct about what this practice can and cannot safely provide.

This is a private practice, not an EAP and not contracted with a department, agency, or hospital. Care is confidential under HIPAA and Utah law, with the limits explained at intake. Sessions are available in person in Midvale and through telehealth across Utah.

FAQ

## Common questions.

Do I have to be sober before I start? +

No. Sobriety is not required to begin therapy. Honest discussion of current use is more useful than waiting until you have reached a particular date.

Will I be judged or forced into a label? +

The work starts with what alcohol does for you, what it costs, and what you want to change. You do not need to adopt a label to begin that conversation.

Can we address trauma and alcohol use together? +

Yes. The current pattern and the trauma or stress underneath it can be addressed together, with memory work paced to where you are.

What if outpatient therapy is not enough? +

If a higher level of care is needed, I will discuss that directly and help you identify appropriate options.

You do not have to solve the drinking before you are allowed to talk about why it became necessary.
