Who I help · Firefighters

# Therapy for firefighters in Utah.

The station runs on humor, routine, and the people next to you. That gets a crew through a lot. It doesn't always get you through the call that follows you home, or the weeks when 24 on and a full house off leave nothing left for yourself. Therapy is a private place to deal with what the job leaves behind.

You might recognize this

## Some of this sounds familiar.

Dark humor at the station is how you handle it, but some calls aren't funny later.

You come home after 24 hours wired and exhausted at the same time, and your family gets what's left.

A beer to cool down after shift has turned into most nights, or more than you'd tell anyone.

A specific fire, crash, or medical call still comes back clearly years later.

You'd rather talk to someone outside the station and outside the department.

How I help

## The work, unhurried.

We work on the calls that stay with you and on the life you come home to, at a pace you set.

Station culture is a real strength. Humor, shared meals, and a crew that has your back are part of how firefighters cope. But those tools are built for getting through the shift. They aren't always enough for the pediatric call, the fatality, or the run where nothing you did could change the outcome. Those can settle into your body and show up as poor sleep, a short fuse, or feeling flat at home. That is the ground PTSD and trauma therapy (https://respondersherpa.com/ptsd-trauma-therapy) covers.

EMDR (https://respondersherpa.com/emdr-therapy-utah) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (https://respondersherpa.com/art-therapy-utah) target specific memories. We pick one call, and you hold it in mind while following guided eye movements. You stay in control, you can stop at any point, and you don't have to narrate the whole thing. The goal is for that memory to lose its grip so it stops showing up uninvited.

The 24-hour rhythm also takes a toll on home life. Missed holidays, a partner who runs the house alone half the week, the adjustment every time you walk back in the door. Solution-focused work helps with the practical side: how you transition home, how you sleep on days off, and how you show up for the people who wait for you.

Alcohol is the default cool-down in a lot of fire culture. If it has crept past where you want it, we can work on that without requiring you to quit first. Read more about addiction counseling for first responders (https://respondersherpa.com/first-responder-addiction).

FAQ

## Common questions.

Can I do sessions around a 24-hour shift schedule? +

Yes. Telehealth anywhere in Utah makes it easier to schedule around your rotation, and in-person sessions are available in Midvale.

How are EMDR and ART different from just talking? +

Both focus on one specific memory at a time using guided eye movements. You don't have to describe every detail out loud. The aim is to take the charge out of the memory rather than retell it week after week.

Is this connected to my department or union? +

No. This is a private practice, not an EAP, and not contracted with any department or agency. Care is confidential under HIPAA and Utah law, with the limits explained at intake.

What does it cost? +

$150 per 50-minute session, paid at the time of the appointment. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide an out-of-network superbill on request. The first 15-minute call is free.

You run toward it for a living.
You don't have to carry it alone after.
