Who I help · Retired first responders

# Therapy after the badge.

Leaving the job can happen by choice, injury, burnout, or a decision made for you. Even when retirement is wanted, the quiet can be disorienting. The identity, structure, team, and constant pace change at once. Calls that stayed contained while you were working may surface when the motion stops.

You might recognize this

## Some of this sounds familiar.

Without the schedule and team, you are not sure what organizes the week or who you are outside the role.

Old calls have become louder now that there is more quiet and fewer immediate demands.

Leaving because of injury or burnout carries anger, grief, or unfinished questions about how it ended.

More free time has also meant more drinking, and the day starts revolving around when you can have the next one.

Family expected retirement to feel easier, but you feel restless, disconnected, or unable to settle into home life.

How I help

## The work, unhurried.

Retirement is not only an ending. Therapy can help you understand what came home with you and build structure that belongs to the life you have now.

First responder work can shape identity through responsibility, competence, belonging, and routine. When the role ends, people around you may focus on the freedom ahead while you feel the loss of a team and a clear purpose. You can be grateful to be out and still grieve what mattered. Those reactions do not cancel each other out.

The pace of the job can also keep memories compartmentalized. There is always another shift, task, or problem requiring attention. Once that pace stops, old calls may return in dreams, images, body reactions, or thoughts that seem to arrive from nowhere. That does not mean retirement caused the problem. It may mean your mind finally has enough room to register what was deferred.

For specific calls that surface, EMDR or Accelerated Resolution Therapy may be useful. Both are structured ways of working with memories, and neither requires you to retell every detail. We begin with pacing and stability, then decide together what to address. Cumulative exposure can be approached even if there is no single incident you consider the worst.

Solution-focused work supports the practical side of transition. We can look at how you want to structure days, which relationships need attention, what parts of the role you want to carry forward, and what no longer fits. The goal is not to replace the job with constant activity. It is to build a life with enough direction, connection, and room to rest.

More time can make alcohol use expand quietly. A drink that once marked the end of shift may move earlier or become the plan for the day. Sobriety is not required to begin therapy. You can examine the pattern honestly, including what it provides and what it is beginning to take, while also addressing the memories or loss underneath it.

This is a private practice, separate from departments and agencies. Sessions are available in person in Midvale or by telehealth anywhere in Utah. Whether you left last month or have been retired long enough to wonder why something is surfacing now, you can use the free call to ask questions and decide whether this approach fits.

FAQ

## Common questions.

Why are old calls showing up after retirement? +

A slower pace can leave more room for memories and reactions that were set aside while the job demanded your attention. Therapy can address them whenever they surface.

Can therapy help if retirement was not my choice? +

Yes. Injury, burnout, or an unwanted ending can bring grief, anger, and loss of identity alongside the adjustment itself.

What if drinking increased after I left the job? +

You can begin therapy without being sober. Alcohol use and the experiences or transition underneath it can be addressed together.

Do I need one specific traumatic call? +

No. Therapy can address cumulative exposure, identity change, and current concerns even when there is no single worst incident.

The role mattered. The next part of your life can matter without asking you to forget it.
