# Solution-focused therapy in Utah.

Solution-focused therapy starts with what you want to be different and looks for practical movement toward it. You do not have to explain every part of your history before identifying a useful next step. The approach uses clear goals, attention to what is already working, scaling questions, and small changes you can recognize in daily life.

You might recognize this

## Some of this sounds familiar.

You want therapy to connect clearly to life outside the session.

You can name what is wrong but need help defining what better would actually look like.

You value direct questions, concrete goals, and a way to notice movement without demanding perfection.

You want to build on the parts of your week that already go better instead of starting from zero.

You may need trauma processing and also want practical work on sleep, communication, alcohol use, or life after shift.

How I help

## The work, unhurried.

The focus is not forced positivity. It is a careful look at your preferred direction, the exceptions to the problem, and the next step that is both meaningful and possible.

A clear goal is more useful than a vague instruction to feel better. We may define what you would notice if sleep were more settled, what your partner would observe if you were more present, or what would change after shift if alcohol were less central. The goal belongs to you and can be revised as you learn more about what matters.

Noticing what already works does not minimize the problem. It helps identify conditions you can repeat. Perhaps one transition after shift leaves you less activated, one conversation stays calmer, or one evening does not follow the usual drinking pattern. We look closely at what was different and whether any part of it can become more intentional.

Scaling questions turn a broad experience into something easier to track. You might place readiness, sleep, confidence, or distress on a simple scale, then describe what moved it even half a point. The number is not a test or a promise. It is a way to make progress and setbacks more specific so the next conversation has something concrete to work with.

Small next steps are chosen for real life, including rotating schedules and unpredictable demands. A step should be clear enough to try and flexible enough to survive a difficult week. Therapy can return to the plan, learn from what happened, and adjust without treating an imperfect attempt as failure.

Solution-focused work can stand on its own or pair with EMDR (https://respondersherpa.com/emdr-therapy-utah) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (https://respondersherpa.com/art-therapy-utah). EMDR or ART may address the memories that keep pulling you back, while solution-focused conversations keep your present-day goals in view. You and Brian decide what combination fits rather than assuming one method belongs in every session.

This approach may suit you if you prefer direct, collaborative work and want goals you can describe in your own language. You can learn more about all specialties (https://respondersherpa.com/specialties) or use the free consultation to ask how the approach could fit what brings you in.

FAQ

## Common questions.

Is solution-focused therapy only about the future? +

It emphasizes where you want to go, but your history still matters. Past experiences are discussed when they help explain the current pattern or guide the next step.

Does focusing on strengths minimize trauma? +

No. Noticing what already helps is not a denial of what happened. Trauma can be addressed directly with EMDR or ART when that fits your goals.

How do scaling questions work? +

You describe where something sits on a simple scale and what a small change would look like. The scale helps make goals and movement more concrete; it is not a grade.

Can I use this approach through telehealth? +

Yes. Individual therapy is available by telehealth anywhere in Utah and in person in Midvale.

You do not need a perfect plan. You need a next step you can recognize and choose.
