Who I help · Paramedics & EMTs

Therapy for paramedics and EMTs in Utah.

In EMS, the next call comes before you have finished the last one. You clean the rig, restock, and go again. There is rarely time to think about what you just saw. Therapy gives you that time now, in a confidential setting that is separate from your agency and its EAP.

You might recognize this

Some of this sounds familiar.

You clear one call and get toned out for the next before your hands have stopped shaking.

Pediatric calls and overdoses stay with you longer than you let on.

There is one patient you still think about, and you run through what you could have done.

Shift fatigue has become your normal, and sleep on days off doesn't feel like rest.

You'd rather not have anyone at work know you are talking to someone.

How I help

The work, unhurried.

We make room for what never got processed on shift, and work on the fatigue and strain that come with the pace.

EMS exposure is relentless in a particular way: high volume, close contact, and almost no downtime between calls. You see people at their most frightened, and you are often the one holding their hand, doing compressions, or making the hard call. Without a chance to process, those moments can stack up and show up later as irritability, poor sleep, numbness, or intrusive images. That is what PTSD and trauma therapy is for.

For the calls that stick, like the child, the overdose that didn't come back, or the patient you can't stop thinking about, I use EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy. Both work on one memory at a time. You don't have to describe every detail, and you can stop at any point. The aim is to take the charge out of the memory so it stops interrupting your life.

Second-guessing is common in EMS. You replay the call and look for what you missed. Some of that is how good medics learn. Some of it turns into guilt that doesn't let go. Therapy can help you tell the difference and set down what isn't yours to carry.

Shift fatigue and rotating nights take a real toll. Solution-focused work helps with the practical parts: protecting sleep, coming down after shift without a drink, and staying connected at home. If alcohol or other substances have become part of the routine, addiction counseling can be part of the work, and you don't have to be sober to start.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is this separate from my agency's EAP?+

Yes. This is a private practice. It is not an EAP and not contracted with any agency or hospital. Care is confidential under HIPAA and Utah law, and the limits are explained at intake.

There's one patient I can't stop thinking about. Is that enough reason to come in?+

Yes. One memory that keeps coming back is a common and reasonable place to start. EMDR and ART are designed to work on exactly that kind of specific memory.

I work nights and rotating shifts. How does scheduling work?+

Telehealth anywhere in Utah helps with odd schedules, and in-person sessions are available in Midvale. We'll find a regular time that fits your rotation as best we can.
