Who I help · Police officers

Therapy for police officers in Utah.

Patrol and investigations put you in front of things most people never see, over and over, for years. You learn to scan every room and read every hand. The trouble is that switch doesn't always turn off when you get home. Therapy is a place to work on that, privately, with someone outside the department.

You might recognize this

Some of this sounds familiar.

You sit facing the door everywhere, and a crowded store feels like a scene to manage.

Certain calls replay, especially at 3am, with the same sounds and the same feeling in your chest.

A drink or two after shift has become the only reliable way to come down.

You are short with your partner or kids, then angry at yourself for it.

You would never use the EAP because you don't trust where the information goes.

How I help

The work, unhurried.

The work has two parts: taking the charge out of the calls that keep coming back, and making daily life easier to live, starting with sleep, anger, and home.

Exposure in law enforcement is rarely one event. It is the accumulation of domestic calls, crashes, deaths, children, and threats, stacked on top of a culture that expects you to shake it off. Over time, your nervous system learns to stay on guard. That hypervigilance kept you safe on the street. At home, it can look like irritability, distance, and trouble sleeping. That is what PTSD and trauma therapy is built to address.

For the specific calls that replay, I use EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy. Both are structured methods that work on one memory at a time using guided eye movements. You don't have to tell the whole story out loud. The aim is for the memory to feel like something that happened, not something that is still happening.

Alongside that, I use solution-focused therapy for the day-to-day: getting sleep back, noticing anger before it spills over, and being present at dinner instead of still on shift in your head. We keep it practical and tied to what you want to be different.

If drinking has become part of how you come down, we can work on that too, without judgment and without requiring you to stop first. See addiction counseling for first responders for more on that side of the work.

Confidentiality may be your first question, and it should be. This is a private practice, not an EAP, and not contracted with any agency. Sessions are self-pay. There is a full answer in will my department find out I'm in therapy?

If you're in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

FAQ

Common questions.

Will my department know I'm seeing you?+

This is a private practice. It is not an EAP and not contracted with any department or agency. Care is confidential under HIPAA and Utah law, and the limits of confidentiality are explained at intake. Your information is not shared without your written consent, outside those legal limits.

Do I have to talk through every call in detail?+

No. EMDR and ART both let you work on a memory without narrating every detail out loud. You decide how much to say, and you can pause at any point.

I drink more than I used to. Do I need to stop before we start?+

No. Sobriety is not required to begin. We start where you are. If a higher level of care like medical detox, IOP, or residential treatment makes sense, I will tell you and help you find it.

Can my spouse see you too?+

I offer individual counseling, including for spouses and partners of officers. I don't offer couples sessions.
